As absorption approached 100%, a flaw in the DM's calculations became obvious. By the mid-1980's, we were pretty much stretching the AD&D rules to their limits. The current Complete Adventurer and Dungeon Master's Agrippa wouldn't be finished until 1988, so there were many submissions by the players for new rules.
