The Great Plague
What happened next was completely unexpected. The Western Empire was unprepared for the threat, and the results were catastrophic. In the mid fourteenth century, a great plague swept the empire. Entire cities were wiped out, all vestiges of civilization crumbled. Later that year in the Reaches, a ship of Rembia was seen drifting towards the coast of Teufeldorf. Excited for news from their homeland, the ship was brought into port. What was found on the ship, however, was not welcome news. No living soul remained. All of the bodies on board were infected with some sort of a disease. The doctors finally guessed that the Plague of the Elder Times had been released, probably as a result of a war at home. Under its devastating effects, the doctors said that they doubt that any living thing had survived the ordeal. From the log of the ghost ship, the historians guess that the people of Rembia died in the year 1353. After burning the ghost ship at sea, the Invincible Overlord proclaimed that in honor of the people who died in Rembia and the second start that they had been given that the year 1353 of the First Age would be known as 1 of the Second Age.
