First Orcish War
By the mid-fourth century, the orcs had driven almost every living soul in the Reaches into Teufeldorf. This time has grown to be known as the First Orcish War. Few villages and farms were spared the wrath of the orcs. With all of the people of the Western Reaches gathered in one place, a general was selected to lead Teufeldorf against the orcs. Men were trained and the plans made. It took nine years for the proper forces to be mustered against the Orc Nation. It was in 351 TA that the line of Ranger Kings was reinstated.
The orcs had long been thwarted in their attempts to take over the City of Teufeldorf. The City-State was well protected by the very wide and swift flowing River White which ran along its entire northern boarder. However, the River White was weakest just above Haggelthorn Forest in the Eastern Reaches. There, a large army could cross the river with relative ease. It is there that the orcs struck, crossing the River White into Haggelthorn Forest with two large armies. One of these entered into the forest and was never seen again. Rumors suggest that the tree ents took a dim view of the orcs' plans and ended their campaign almost as soon as the army entered the forest. The second army of about four thousand orcs made it through the forest and appeared just north of Markinghamshire castle. They moved northward into the Pass of Merchants and stormed Dwarrowdelf.
Soon, the orcs left the Eastern Reaches and began their long journey across the Plains of the Wilderland following the Lesser Farthing Road to Teufeldorf. When all looked hopeless for the Realm defenders, a large army of horsemen from Markinghamshire appeared in the east. These men had ridden almost three hundred leagues to fight the orcs. The orcs were slain, and the First Orcish War came to an end. The King of Teufeldorf rebuilt the Dwarrowdelf and appointed its first human ruler, the Baron. Eventually, the city's name was changed to Paddington. Markinghamshire was granted status as a duchy, and two defensive castles were built: Rivershaw Castle on a strategic island in the River White and the Coral Castle near where the River White dumps into the Inner Sea. These were established to prevent further invasions of the City-State by the orcs moving through the Pass of Merchants.
