In 1638 a small group of hardy men set sail in a sloop they "acquired" from the public dock in Tortuga. They chose as their leader Black Tom Bartlett as he organized the "acquisition," spoke aggressively of pirating the Caribbean to gather great wealth, and because the men were slightly afraid of him! For the next year the crew sailed the seas, carousing in the pirate havens and capturing several ships. The captures never created the wealth originally predicted and Black Tom's rather aggressive style became more dastardly and cruel with each passing month. As the crew's unfortunate luck continued, Black Tom became more and more barbaric to his own men and the ships they captured. With the last capture, Black Tom brutally murdered the survivors despite his assurances to them that he would spare their life if they surrendered!

By 1639, the crew was ready to maroon Black Tom because of their suspiciously long run of bad luck and because they were oppressed by his brutality. However, no one was willing to challenge Black Tom and no one wanted to leave the little wealth the ship did hold. This all changed with the crew's most recent visit to St John's Harbor in Antigua.

While drinking in the Davey Jones Tavern after a long and unsatisfactory cruise, Black Tom and his men crossed paths with a pirate by the name of Dave Martin. Martin had with him a loyal band including his Quartermaster Sam Teach, his personal first mate Annie Rack, a master gunner by the name of John Jones and a swashbuckling lad by the name of Pierre Lafayette. It was this small band that Black Tom and his men picked a fight with over a treasure map which the Martin group was investigating. Black Tom attacked Dave after several challenges to fight. Being in little mood to fight a drunkard with a bad attitude, Dave had initially shrugged him off. But once attacked Dave parried Black Tom's thrust and stuck his dagger into Tom. All of a sudden seven men closed in on Dave, but Annie covered his back and dispatched one attacker, Pierre dazzled three of the attackers and took them out one by one, while Sam and John killed the last three. At this point, Black Tom's remaining crew capitulated as their nemesis and his closest henchmen were dead. They gave a rousing cheer to Dave and asked if he would like to captain their ship Hunter? Over a few tankards of ale and rum a deal was struck for Dave and his loyal men (with Annie) to join the Jolie Rouge and lead the crew on the next adventure.

The following morning after a slow start brought on by too much ale and rum, the new crew made their way to the ship, provisioned her and made sail to the primary sea lanes. From the flagstaff, Dave unfurled his personal bloody red flag with a large death symbol in the middle with a device of a doubloon on one side and an hourglass on the other. The meaning was obvious, or became so to the ships of the Caribbean, that when they saw this flag their time was running out and they had better surrender their life or their money! The new adventures of Gentleman Dave and the Jolie Rouge was about to begin!
