Prologue

It is the Summer of 1892. I have been for some time recovering from my harrowing experiences of earlier this year - although the images are still burned into my maddened mind.

However, today I read in the Times that the Bayhaven Lights have been seen over Bayhaven two days ago - its first appearance in three years. I have done some research into the phenomena and the environs - a copy of which follows this entry in my journal. The news also reports a laughing sickness is spreading through one of the poorer neighborhoods of Bayhaven, and the medical examiners are baffled. Several people have had to be hospitalized and several others have died. About noon, a letter arrived asking me to put together a small team to investigate.

My first stop is to be a visit to the Golders Green Asylum here in London to visit with one of the afflicted patients. After that, I suspect a trip to Bayhaven is in order - perhaps I will see the Lights directly. It will be good to be out in the field again, and hopefully a trip to the seaside will be invigorating.
