Logbook of Jerek Stonewall - Entry Number 2
March 2nd, 908 TA
Well, we survived the night, which is a minor miracle. We also seem to have brought some attention onto ourselves, which hopefully will be a good thing in the long run. Anything we can do to help in the coming fight against the demons, which we are now supposed to keep hush hush about.
We awoke the morning after our little foray into the sewers to find a dwarf woman rummaging around the back yard. We moved out to greet her, and was introduced to Lt. Greyriver, of the town guard. She was investigating the creature that had come around the house last night and we were only too happy to describe it for her. She told us that the creature was in fact a demon, and they had been encroaching on the city in small numbers recently. She told us that we could not tell anyone else about the presence of demons, and that if anyone asked, we were to say that there were wolf attacks. We also informed her of the presence of evil happenings going on in the house over yonder, and she said that we were to stay away from there, and that it was under the control of The Family. She thanked us for our information and departed.
Now that we had a full city to explore and a new day to explore it, we split up into two groups. Lady Spring and I would go into the market to gather supplies and information while the others would go to the Temple District and speak to their various representatives. At the market, we kept hearing about the mysterious wolf attacks, and how they were mostly located nearer the poor quarter of town. I also heard tell of a place that I would very much enjoy called the Storyteller's Inn, who were home of the Fellowship of Wee People, like-minded folk to myself who enjoyed traveling and enjoyed adventure. The Others first went to Korag’s monastery, although only Korag was able to stay awake in there. Apparently he was accepted and they would train him. They then went to the Temple of the Shadows for Lady Malika, and she too was accepted by their group.
With our job gathering supplies done, Lady Spring and I went to the local pub that was frequented by the town guard. We mingled with the soldiers and learned that a paladin of theirs had gone missing. This was most likely the knight that we had seen tortured by The Family. I then attempted to find out who or what the Angel King was, and when I uttered those words, the room changed. The guards looked at me as if I was a monster, and Lady Spring and I made our leave hastily. We were soon followed by guards, and learned that we were going to have “escorts” for the foreseeable future.
We got back to the house, just as the others got there and the guards soon set up a watch covering all entrances to the house. Not wanting ourselves to be followed, we went back down the secret passage into the sewers. We headed back towards the grate with the skeletons where the edge of town would be to investigate further. After a little searching, we found a small opening off to the side, and that passage led to a ladder that led all the way back up to the surface, protected by a puzzle with a tree motif. In this same side passage, we found a small hidden chest that held an ancient key.
With this in hand, we went towards the unexplored section of the tunnels, and were surprised to hear voices coming from a large chamber with a wooden platform off to the side, and a large drain in the center. As we approached, we were addressed by the Key and Dagger Society, apparently a rag-tag group of child gnomes, led by a pair of twin brothers. Although we tried to reason with the gnomes on the platform, they attacked us. We had a short fight, as Korag turned himself into a bear and killed one of the brothers, Chester, outright. The other children on the platform were subdued quickly, and they told us that there were others of their group who would come to their rescue. I kept watch for these others and we soon captured the other gnomes, although the other twin was also killed in the process. The children had a large chest on their platform, and when our good friend Neptune went to open it, a gelatinous cube dropped from the ceiling and enveloped Korag. We dispatched the monster before it could do lasting damage and received what few riches the kids had.
Having secured the area, we looked at the drainage hole, as the kids had set up an apparatus to explore it. We went down, and saw that there was a really old passage that the drainage hole cut into. It led down a ways and ended in a large room whose opposite wall was filled entirely with a set of double doors embroidered with the pattern of an ancient tree, and with seven keyholes. We decided that we would leave this be for now as we were tired. All of us save Korag went back to the house for the night. He stayed to make sure his transformation back didn’t harm anyone and told us to pick him back up the next morning.
We did, and we decided to go to the library to get more information on the key and the gate. They would only give us information if we had something to trade, and since we did not, we were told that we would need to perform tasks in order to do it. We would need to cleanse a place of spirits in a haunted house in order to make a fair trade. We agreed and were on our way. We arrived at the house and were immediately attacked by a group of large stirges. These creatures were not too much of a threat and we have quickly struck them down. We are now on the precipice of this haunted place, and who knows what lays inside.
